The Training Day Denzel Washington middle finger t-shirt refers to the 2001 crime thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by David Ayer. Washington plays Alonzo Harris, a corrupt, swaggering LAPD narcotics detective whose defiance and unpredictable behavior make the gesture fit his character.
Where the Training Day reference came from
Alonzo is a 13-year veteran assigned to evaluate rookie cop Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke, during a 24-hour ride-along. He disregards the rules and pressures Jake to drink beer for “ballast,” one of the film’s many displays of his unhinged confidence and corruption.
Training Day became a modern classic, and moments from Washington’s performance continue to circulate in pop culture and internet memes. The character’s defiant attitude now serves as shorthand for being completely fed up.
